Affiliated Societies
For a society to become affiliated to the BMI it must have aims consistent with those of the BMI as set out in the 1854 Act, namely, the “Diffusion and Advancement of Science, Literature and Art” and it will be asked to pay an annual Affiliation Fee.

In return, the society will qualify for a preferential discount of 25% on daytime room hire charges and 35% on evening bookings, in recognition of the contribution made by Affiliated Societies to the cultural life of the Institute.

Affiliation Fees:

Societies up to 25 members – £10.00
Societies between 26 and 50 members - £20.00
Societies between 51 and 100 members - £40.00
Societies between 101 and 150 members - £60.00
Societies between 151 and 200 members - £80.00 with an additional £1.00 per member thereafter.

It is recognised that the number of active members is not always easily arrived at, and it is therefore possible for societies to discuss the appropriate Affiliation Fee with the Administrator of the Institute.

Registered Charities

Registered charities will be offered a 20% discount. This is NOT in addition to the discounts available to Affiliated Societies.

Affiliation fees are payable on the 1st July of each year.

The Alliance of Literary Societies AGM is hosted each year by a member society celebrating an anniversary, and anyone interested in literature is welcome. Contact: Hon. Sec. Meetings held most Wednesdays at 6.30pm.
Birmingham and Midland Society for Genealogy and Heraldry
A friendly society formed to further the study of family history and heraldry. Meetings take place on the first Wednesday of each month (excluding August) at 7.30pm at the BMI. Visitors are always welcome.

British Russian Society (Midlands)

Society for the History of Astronomy
The Society has recently opened the Sir Robert Ball Library at the Institute. The Society is the UK’s national society in this field, and its library at the BMI, is its national reference library.

Society of Bookbinders
An organisation dedicated to the promotion of skills and knowledge in the craft of bookbinding. Founded in 1974 and with a current membership of some 750. The Society welcomes all with an interest in the hand made book, both professional and amateur. Activities are arranged regionally and typically range from workshop and practical demonstrations, to visits to major libraries, binders and craft suppliers. Nationally the Society organises a major biennial Conference offering lectures and master classes by internationally renowned figures in the bookbinding world. Other one and two day classes are offered at other times. The Society’s library of books about bookbinding and related arts is housed at the Birmingham and Midland Institute.
