Stephen Nicol Exhibition

Steve is an artist and traveller who has lived, worked in several countries for 40 years. These include the UK, USA, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Thailand, South Korea, Nepal, Cambodia and the Sudan.

The paintings on show here are oil paintings representing those countries like a travelogue.

Stylistically he’s a new realist experimenting with some monochromatic and double image paintings, influenced by Andy Warhol amongst others. He uses a restricted palette to enhance each locations particular atmosphere.

More recently more surreal images. A central area in full colour unwinds and blends into just one colour like seeing an image in a dream .

His first one-man show was in Khartoum, the Sudan at the Hotel Excelsior in 1978.

Since then he has sold paintings and artwork to UB40, the Reggae pop group and exhibited with Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones in Amsterdam.

The Birmingham Evening Post critic described his paintings as “stills from a continuing drama”.

Steve influences are both classical and modern from Rembrandt, Vermeer, Fragonard, Rubens, Goya, to Toulouse Lautrec, Van Gogh and Edward Hopper. He regards Pop Art as the last influential movement.

This is a free exhibition, no booking necessary. Please note that on Saturday’s 10am-12pm & 1pm-3pm only the foyer collection will be available to view, due to art classes in the Gallery room.
