Thomas Hardy, Far From the Madding Crowd (1874)

In structuring his novel around one woman with three men wooing her, Hardy chooses symbolic names; his heroine Bathsheba is encircled by Gabriel Oak, Sergeant Troy and William Boldwood. The rural setting with its established values contrasts with the military encampment. it’s a firmly naturalistic novel grounded in seasonal patterns and farming challenges.
