Wilkie Collins, The Woman in White (1860)

Considered by many to be Wilkie Collins’ best novel, The Woman in White, was first published in serial form (1859-60). It combines aspects of the detective novel with an awareness of how women’s social and legal inequality makes them vulnerable to manipulation. The use of multiple narrators functions in a comparable way to witnesses giving accounts of what has happened.
