William Shakespeare, Henry IV Parts I&II (1596-98)

Despite their titles these two plays are individually complete. Both are tightly constructed and richly layered. The political unrest faced by King Henry is compounded by problems with his recalcitrant son. Prince Hal prefers the companionship of Falstaff in vibrant Eastcheap to his responsibilities at court.
