William Shakespeare, Henry V (1599)

This play is frequently celebrated as a stirringly patriotic call to arms. It is quoted at moments of national crisis and on the rugby field. However, Shakespeare’s play is more complex. It is equivocal both about the decision to go to war and also about the handling of the combat itself. The wooing scene brilliantly demonstrates a characteristically British awkwardness about speaking a foreign language and celebrates a spirited Kate!
